is explored in this excellent program featuring crisp underwater footage, scientific photos, and onscreen graphics. Offered
in several versions (primary school with or without narration, middle school and high school/ general audience, with
scripts tailored to each target group), Crabs and Barnacles is divided into two sections, covering roughly the same
information for each crustacean: types, life cycle, environments and habitats, behaviors, and molting, as well as the
environmental and economic roles of these marine arthropods. The accompanying teaching resources
(in age-appropriate sets) include vocabulary lists, diagrams, the scripts in English and Spanish,
and other useful materials. Designed to complement existing science curricula, this informative and
affordable title is highly recommended. Crabs and Barnacles : is an innovative and flexible learning tool that compliments existing science curricula. Its focus animals are crabs and barnacles, two of the marine relatives of insects, spiders, and centipedes. Like insects, crabs and barnacles are arthropods, the 'jointed legged animals'. The DVD introduces the diversity of crabs and barnacles that live on our water covered planet. In doing so, it first introduces the Arthropods and outlines the common characteristics of the members of this highly successful group. Details are provided about crustaceans and where crabs and barnacles fit. Characteristics of crabs and barnacles are discussed. Crab and barnacle life cycles are examined and compared. Growth though molting is shown and discussed. Environmental and economic roles of crabs and barnacles are examined. The “Crabs and Barnacles” DVD is a flexible teaching tool that provides three sets of movies and teaching resources targeted at different knowledge or grade levels – High School / General Audience, Secondary / Middle School and Primary School. A menu for each grade level allows the teacher to customize the presentation of the movies to best meets the needs of their class. All grade level menus offer the options to play: The “Crabs” and “Barnacles” movies as one presentation; Just the “Crabs” movie; or Just the “Barnacles” movie The Secondary/Middle School menu provides additional choices for the ways in which the movie components may be viewed, allowing the teacher to either show the full versions of the movies which include the High School mating sequences or to show abbreviated (Abrv.) versions of the movies that exclude the mating sequences. The Primary School menu allows the movies to be played with a combination of narration over music or with just background music. This option provides an additional movie – Observing Crab Behavior – that only has background music and is designed to allow the students to act as scientists studying crab behaviors. The Observing Crab Behavior movie includes a short section on hermit crabs, which aren’t true crabs but are well known to children. Three sets of Teaching Resources, one for each grade level, are located on the DVD and may be printed for use with the movies. The teaching resources include: the narrative script in English and Spanish, lists of vocabulary words used in the movies, and suggestions for Quizes, Exercises (incuding diagrams), Review and Discussion Topics and Independent Research Topics.
